Who is God?

Most If not all people at some point in their life have questioned the origin of the universe and their purpose or role in it all. Is everything random? Does one’s existence make a difference in the world or could someone else play their exact roles? Some have sought answers in science and come up with multiple theories the foremost being ‘the big bang,’ others found comfort in religion and the creation stories, while the rest are content just thinking we exist, therefore we are.

Let’s say the universe was random, that would mean in our solar system the earth just randomly happened to be at the exact spot to harbor life, human beings of all species just happened to evolve with a bigger brain and reign over other animals, animals that evolved just happened to stop evolving at some point, and the interdependence among species just happened to almost perfectly figure itself out. Then let’s look at us, the human body is the most efficient system ever known to man till this day, the millions of neurons in the brain processing information or hormones evoking feelings, yet, with all the experiments or research done we’ve been incapable of recreating such an efficient system from scratch. In fact all the things we’ve discovered are only but a fraction of all there is to know.

Plausible or not it goes without say that some things cannot be logically or scientifically explained, even great scientists like Newton when it came to earth’s magnetic fields and position they expressed that there must be a powerful or Supreme Being holding everything together, “Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain who set the planets in motion.” Most religions describe the Supreme Being as God and attribute that He made everything. That would make things so much easier right; people come up with a notion that there’s someone out there whom we can’t really see that made everything and we just believe that without questioning and life moves on… Some did question though, they tried to use science to diminish religion and presented fossils of dinosaurs and the first man.Creation stories have never mentioned anything about dinosaurs or the Australopithecus. Whereas watching the news for just a few seconds outlines there’s inherent evil in the world yet science has come short of explaining paranormal activity and miracles.

A common question often raised is whether one is born with good or evil traits or are they nurtured? Psychologists and scientists have been researching If a gene causing extreme anger or dangerous physiological disorders is detected early in a fetus, can the world eventually get rid or have a record of the wrong doers beforehand? Let’s not digress, the reality is that everyone is capable of both good and evil, and yes some may say we only feel bad because we were nurtured into creating a distinction between good and bad. However, people often have a guilty conscious that is based on their inner principles and beliefs regardless of what society deems. Like when a little child does something and hides even though they may not even know what they did but they feel bad about it. Invariably almost all laws in the world are based on a higher moral code often depicted in religion.

Consequently our inner conscious, sense of craving purpose and spiritualism do draw to the Idea that we have a creator. As well as that there’s a plan for the world and its people since the beginning of time. It isn’t all random, the beauty that is in the world, the feelings and emotions caused by love or joy, our knowledge, talents and experiences, and the sense of fate or destiny are all part of the bigger picture. One may have material possessions but they cannot escape time, or feeling void or incomplete as we all have a purpose, a role to play, and crave meaningful connections.

Perhaps a Supreme Being exists but what about the dinosaurs and fossils? Well If one takes a closer look at the biblical account of creation, In Genesis It is written that in the beginning the earth was without form or void. Based on the Scriptural characterization of the Creator, He isn’t one to create a formless and empty world, could it be that there were other beings before us, could it be that the world was already destroyed once before which would explain the asteroid wipe-out and volcanic eruptions, and in that world dinosaurs and less intelligent cave like men existed? It’s certainly plausible and thus science and religion are not as contradictory as one may think, in some ways they amplify each other. Like when we study the microscopic parts of the human cells and how they all work together to form organs and thus body systems, we find a carefully calculated and complex masterpiece which leaves a mark of the artist.

So who is God? People will often have a different perception of God as He reveals Himself differently to different people and has a personal relationship with each person. Ultimately though, scripture describes Him as an all knowing, all powerful, all present, Lord of lords and King of kings. He is the creator of the universe thus why it’s often far-fetched to describe Him using language or logic since a creation cannot quantify or fully describe its creator. The idea of an all mighty God may raise the question of why He created us and what He wants with us? It’s simple really, He created us to give Him glory and have an intimate relationship with Him, and the greatest thing He wants us to do is love Him and love others.

Contrary to what some may think, God is not an authoritarian who demands submission and condemns anyone who doesn’t. He is rather the perfect depiction of love, His unconditional love is beyond measure as He loved us before we first loved Him. He personally knows each of us by name  that He even knows the number of hairs on our heads. Furthermore, though all powerful, He still gifted us with free-will so that we love Him on our own accord. It goes without say that the world is broken but His children find meaning, protection, grace, love and provision among many other things in Him; and He has planned a blissful eternity for those who choose Him. A place not constrained by time, space, human limits or darkness but an aura of everlasting joy, love and beauty.
